The ACO with the support of the Circle for Children Foundation, is providing a clinical post adoption/permanency social work service to the adoption community.

Support Group

Changing the Script- Relationship is The Key ©

"THE KIDS COME TO US WITH BAGS WE HAVE NOT PACKED."
- veteran adoptive parent
JoAnne Dumaresq.

Adoptive parents, especially those who are raising children who have experienced significant loss and trauma, tell us over and over again that they are surprised and sometimes at a loss as to how to deal with their children's behaviour. Over the past 3 years, the Adoption Council of Ontario has offered adoptive parents a safe forum in which to meet and share their experiences, to reflect and problem solve together. These meetings are facilitated by expert clinicians on the staff of the Adoption Council of Ontario.

They are modelled on a program called "Changing the Script: Relationship is the Key" ©

What are participants saying?

  • "The facilitators are so experienced, so supportive and knowledgeable, trustworthy."
  • "We feel understood like no other place about our adopt[ion] journey"
  • "This group was LIFE CHANGING!! I wish that every prospective adoptive family could be a part of a group. We can not imagine our family's life without this group."
  • "This group helped me survive parenting and helped us [as] a couple survive our marriage."
  • "It is a safe and supportive setting in which to share our struggles and worries. Most participants have said that the group was the only place where they felt comfortable doing that."

Individual Counselling and Family Counselling

Families can receive direct or indirect social work support through our Post Adoption Support program.. Referrals for post adoption support can come directly from families, from CAS  agencies , mental health professionals or other community partners. To adoptees, adoptive families and birth families we deliver personalized help, expert navigation, training and timely post adoption services that are available from first placement and throughout the lifelong journey. To professional and community members we provide adoption support, resources, training and information. We actively advocate with government, policy-makers and stakeholders to advance post adoption services and address gaps.

We offer families our SANE (Support, Anticipation, Normalization and Education) approach to adoptive parenting. While our services are in the developmental stages, we are aiming to meet the identified post adoption needs as they are presented to us by families and agencies across the province. Our vision is to develop comprehensive Post Adoption programs to meet the needs of all families in our adoption community.

Consultations are available by telephone and email. Home visits are also available in the GTA.

ACO Youth Network

The Adoption Council of Ontario has been developing a Youth Network which will give adopted youth ages 14-25 the chance to connect and provide a platform for messages that they wish to share with the community. Recently, we have focused on encouraging youth to start groups in their own communities with our support. If you are interested in attending a Youth Network meeting, or starting a group in your area please contact pass@adoptontario.ca or 416-482-0021 ex. 2888. Peer to Peer Support

Currently we offer a opportunity for families to connect with experienced peers who can identify with their adoption experience. Our hope is to develop a full peer to peer support and mentorship program in the future.
