GETTING BACK TO SCHOOL

The fall of this year finds many families navigating the challenges and realities of heading back to school after many months at home and together. For some children and families this is a time to look forward to seeing friends and getting some much-needed breaks. For others it may be scary, uncertain and may produce anxiety. Like any aspect of COVID-19 it comes with new approaches and many unknowns as we all navigate together.

One of the ACO's partners created and generously shared a wonderful webinar which is full of tips and strategies for families and has a wonderful social story for children as they return to school and the differences and adjustments that brings. It is now available on demand.

During COVID all of our webinars continue to be free.

Our guest writer this month speaks so clearly about the truth and challenges of living in uncertainty. A reality for all children, teens and adults living in adoption and permanency journeys. As we live with the uncertainty that COVID-19 continues to bring to our lives, let’s hold each other with gentleness and compassion, knowing we are striving to do the best and be the best we can be. Holding and seeing our children through this lens is their best hope for developing strength and resiliency.

The fall is also the time for the ACO's Annual General Meeting. It is being held virtually on Wednesday, September 30, 2020 from 7pm – 8:30pm. You are invited to join us as we celebrate the successes and challenges of this past year. While we cannot socialize in the same way, you can meet the staff and the Board and hear about our directions and plans for the upcoming year. We would love to see you.

As we enter into this next phase of life within COVID-19 I would like to thank everyone who supports the ACO and the work we do to provide information, education, training and services to those who are living in adoption and permanency and their families.

As I complete my first year as Executive Director at the ACO, I want to share my awe at the work that the staff and volunteers at the ACO do. Their hearts and their passion combine with skill and knowledge. I am grateful to each one of them every day. I am excited about the new messages and directions we are planning for this year ….

As always Warmest Regards,

Dianne Mathes, Executive Director, Adoption Council of Ontario

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Never Too Late Program team Member Chloe writes about returning to school for her Masters during the pandemic.

While she knew there would be some unknowns surrounding going back to school, she had no idea that navigating a global pandemic would be one of them.

All of this uncertainty is reminiscent of her time growing up in care.
