Keynote: Identity and Belonging
Presented by Dianne Mathes

Identity and Belonging are key concepts to understanding adoption and permanency journeys. Who am I? is a question all of us grapple with, but there can be many more layers to the search for identity in adoption, including questions such as who and where did I come from? Likewise, having a sense of belonging is something all humans need, but this can be more challenging for children and youth on permanency journeys.

Join us to explore together what adoptive/kinship and customary care families need to know about identity and belonging, and how they can help their children build their identity and create a sense of belonging for them.

About Dianne

Dianne Mathes has over 35 years of experience providing therapy and education/training for individuals, couples, children and families and professionals. Using attachment therapy, she specializes in adoption and provides therapy and training on the experiences and realities of early separation, adoption, abandonment, trauma, abuse, loss and grief as well as the multi-layered experience of being adopted and being a family in adoption. Dianne is herself an adoptee and has experienced her own personal journey in adoption and reunion. Dianne has a Certificate of Social Work degree from Ryerson University and is a member of the OCSSWSW.
