Barrie - Changing the Script: Relationship is the Key©

Adoptive parents, especially those who are raising children who have experienced significant loss and trauma, tell us over and over again that they are surprised and sometimes at a loss as to how to deal with their children’s behaviour. Challenging behaviours can interfere with the parent-child relationship and threaten the foundation of permanence on which adoption and permanency planning are based. We believe that supporting the parent/child relationship is the key to family stability and ultimately to permanency. Through this group, the Adoption Council of Ontario offers adoptive parents a safe forum in which to meet and share their experiences, to reflect and problem solve together. The sessions are facilitated by adoption competent, trauma informed clinicians.

"The kids come to us with bags we have not packed."

- veteran adoptive parent JoAnne Dumaresq

What are participants saying?

  • "The facilitators are so experienced, so supportive and knowledgeable, trustworthy."
  • "We feel understood like no other place about our adopt[ion] journey"
  • "This group was LIFE CHANGING!! I wish that every prospective adoptive family could be a part of a group. We can not imagine our family's life without this group."
  • "This group helped me survive parenting and helped us [as] a couple survive our marriage."
  • "It is a safe and supportive setting in which to share our struggles and worries. Most participants have said that the group was the only place where they felt comfortable doing that."

Who is this for?

Families most in need who may be parenting in isolation or struggling with the day-to-day care of their child. Maximum participants per group is ten.

How does it work?

Weekly meetings provide the opportunity for families to understand how their child(ren)’s (and their own) previous life experiences have shaped their respective views of the world and their behaviors.

This group gives participants an opportunity to tell their families’ story and share their experiences. While there is an educational component to this program, the main focus of Changing the Script is a facilitated group process which encourages sharing and reflective discussions within a safe, supportive, non-judgmental environment.

ACO provides additional clinical support to families beyond the group format as needed.

Who runs this group?

Judy Archer, MSW, RSW, is a mental health therapist who recently joined the ACO as manager of the Permanency and Adoption Support Services team in 2016. Judy has over 40 years of experience working in the field of adoption, foster care, and special needs. She has also had the privilege of providing a myriad of mental health services in First Nation communities on Vancouver Island and at family services agencies in both Vancouver and Northern Ontario
