ACO's Search and Reunion - May Special Presentation

Interested in looking for birth relatives but not sure where to start?

The ACO’s Permanency and Adoption Support Services Program offers a once-monthly Search and Reunion Support Group for all adults touched by adoption who are considering, mid-way through or impacted by search and reunion issues.  The purpose of this group is to provide opportunities for group members to share their personal experiences and perspectives while having access to support, education and resources related to this unique stage of the lifelong process of adoption.

Learn about May's special presenter below!

Topics

The group covers multiple topics that include but are not restricted to the following:

  • Why search
  • How, when and where to begin
  • Potential risks and rewards
  • Dealing with competing needs of family members impacted by the decision to search
  • Expectations and fantasies versus realities and outcomes
  • Predictable stages, pre- and post-reunion
  • Seven core issues in adoption (e.g., grief, loss, identity which can affect all members of the constellation)

Special Presentation in May - Dancing from Reunion to Reconnection

Guest Speaker

Dr. Michael Grand, PhD, C.Psych., Professor Emeritus, Clinical Psychology University of Guelph, Psychotherapist in adoption, and Author of The Adoption Constellation: New Ways of Thinking About and Practicing Adoption.

The experience of adoption reunion and reconnection is like a dance: It takes two to tango!

While the goal is for both dance partners to coordinate their dance steps in harmony, this is not easily accomplished. A change by either person requires the other to adjust. To do this well, you must know how you are “dancing” toward reconnection and be willing to change. In this workshop, open to adoptees, first parents and adoptive parents, we will use the dance metaphor to understand the challenges and successful strategies for moving from reunion to reconnection.

Who is this for?

The group is open to all members of the adoption constellation: birth family members, adoptive family members and adult adopted persons.

Who facilitates this group?

Jacquie Tjandra, M.S.W., R.S.W, adoption counsellor and Beverley Nettleton, B.A., counsellor with personal and professional experiences in adoption.
